3 Ways to Help Your Child Read More This Summer

This summer I have made it my goal to encourage my second grade son to read more books. Here are three things that I have found helpful to get him to pick up a book and read!

  1. I gave him more access to books. I have been making it more convenient for him to pick up books by making them easy to access. One way I have done that is by having a book bin in the car. Both my boys have loved having books in the car to look through and read. Added bonus they have fought a lot less in the car, because they are engaged in reading!
  2. We have visited our local library regularly. It is amazing how many fun activities local libraries have in the summer. Our local library has free lunches, many forms of entertainment, and reading challenges happening throughout the summer. We initially visited our library to watch a ventriloquist show, but once there my boys found many books that they were excited to read. On our first summer visit, we also signed up for the libraries summer reading challenge. After they read 10 books they get to choose a book to keep and get a coupon for a free meal from a restaurant. Check your local libraries to find fun summer activities near to you.
  3. We listen to audio books. Audio books are a great way to expose your child to higher level vocabulary and improve their listening comprehension. My boys have really enjoyed listening to an audio book during their bedtime routine. After listening to a book, my second grader often wants to find books in the same series or similar books to read. Tip: Many libraries allow access to audio books from their website or from an app, Our local library uses the app Hoopla to provide free audio books to its patrons. Download the app to see if your local library does too!
