As teachers, it is hard for us to fit everything in to our jammed packed school days. Between math, reading ELD, and other requirements thrown in by administration, time is limited. In past years, direct phonemic instruction would get neglected on some days. Sometimes it was because we just ran out of time. Other days, once we got to phonemic awareness, the class was getting wiggly and ready for a break.
The last few years, I have found a solution that I can actually commit to: Daily Phonemic Awareness Slides. The slides make teaching phonemic awareness quick and easy. I don’t have to prep anything or think about how I’m going to teach any skills. I just pull up the slides on the Promethean board and click on the day we are working on. Phonemic awareness instruction is done in 5 to 10 minutes. That’s it! I find that having visual picture clues on the board really help students to stay focused and engaged.
After our centers, right before lunch, is when we practice our phonemic awareness skills. The students come to the carpet and the Student of the Week comes up to the front. The Student of the Week get the special job of swiping the slides on the Promethean Board. Each day the students practice three skills. Those skills are taught for the whole week. As the school year goes on the skills get more complex. There are even review weeks to make sure that students are retaining the information. I love that I don’t worry about what I am going to teach for phonemic awareness. The activities are ready to go in bite sized pieces! Check out the scope and sequence below to see all the skills taught through the year.

Now, my class loves phonemic awareness time! I have seen a great improvement in my students phonemic awareness skills since implementing the daily slides. This is one way easy way to embed phonemic awareness instruction into you daily routines.
